Owning economic operator
The owning economic operator follows the passport from its creation through to closure or transfer — it is the only role allowed to write to it.
At a glance
Who
The company — manufacturer, importer, or an operator that took over responsibility for the passport — that owns it.
Access
Full read/write access to its own passports, subject to its Company account's internal permissions.
Its journey with a battery
- 1
Manufacturing
The manufacturer creates the passport and enters the mandatory fields as soon as an identifiable unit is produced.
- 2
Placing on the market
The operator placing the battery on the EU market — manufacturer, importer, or distributor under its own brand — completes and validates the missing fields, publishes the battery passport, and triggers generation of the regulatory QR code.
- 3
Use
For as long as it remains responsible, the operator updates the dynamic fields: state of health (SoH), usage cycles, change of ownership.
- 4
Takeover by a new operator
If the battery is taken over for reuse or refurbishment, its passport becomes read-only as soon as the transfer happens — history is kept — and the new operator creates a linked passport, which it then becomes responsible for in turn.
- 5
End of life
If the battery is recycled while it is still the owner, the passport closes following the approved recycler's declaration.
Who can write to this passport
Only the owning operator can write to its passport, subject to its team's internal permissions. A past-due bill or a subscription cancellation blocks only writing — never the ten-year public read guarantee.
What the history shows
The owning operator has access to the full modification history of its passport.
